Bishops

The US Bishops recently released a video decrying the way the United States' government is treating immigrants.  Their plea to love one's neighbor should not be controversial.  However, in the era of the culture wars, it has come under fire.

One conservative talking head wonders why the US Bishops didn't release a video condemning the Biden Administration for supporting a woman's right to choose, and child castration.   This talking head wants people to believe he has the best interest of children.  Yet, when it comes to children experiencing food insecurity, he made a video calling SNAP benefits a scam. It's not.  And when a children's hospital received bomb threats, he quickly went to work to claim the story was false.  It wasn't.

It's one thing to want the bishops to do more.  It's another thing to say that that the current President's policies are not in conflict with scripture.  They are.

"Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!”

Hebrews 13:2

This passage in Hebrews would be in conflict with our current President's policies.  The scripture instructs people to welcome strangers.  According to scholars this verse in Hebrews in a reference to when Abraham welcomed strangers (Genesis 18-19), and was blessed as they turned out to be messengers from the Yahweh.  

But what if they wish to do harm?

"But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven."

Matthew 5:44-45

It would seem even if they hated you, which they don't, Yahweh instructs his followers to welcome immigrants. He does not wish for any government to make a policy to have immigrants removed.

The response of the culture warriors is very telling.  I often wonder how they would have responded to the Holocaust as it was happening.  The reaction to the US Bishop video would say that the culture warriors would have actively condemned bishops or any religious leader who hid Jewish people to keep them safe.  

The actions of the religious leaders in Europe during the 1940s was risky, and a lot of religious leaders were imprisoned, and died because of it.  There are religious leaders who are being arrested for protesting the treatment of immigrants in the United States today.

It is far better to do what is right in the eyes of Yahweh, than to follow the law of man.  

The US Bishops are brave, and courageous for making their video.  They know what scripture says, and know that the policies of this administration are in conflict with Yahweh's instructions.

I Plead the 14th

  Matthew Walsh proposed solutions to stop foreign entities from taking over the country. One of the solutions is to only grant voting rights to people who speak English. It’s surprising he doesn’t know that would be a violation of the 14th Amendment.  It would be a violation to abridge the rights of a citizen of the United States.  A citizen, as defined by the Bill of Rights, is anyone born or naturalized, and subject to jurisdiction thereof. Requiring only citizens who speak English can vote would be a violation of their 14th Amendment rights. It’s possible Matthew Walsh believes the Amendments to the Constitutions are not valid.  It’s not clear how he feels about the 14th Amendment or the 13th Amendment or the 19th Amendment.  But based on his monologues including the one discussed here he possibly doesn’t recognize the validity of two of them.
